[:1]So after all these years, I'm thinking of getting Legendary Guardian and possibly vanquisher. The survivor update made me want it on my main, but he's already done everything in NM so I only have HM left. I'm off to a good start (1:10 Unwaking and a smooth 6/6 Dzagonur, woo!) so I thought I should be fine as long as I avoid the worst places.
Droajam's mob in Poisoned Outcrops would be one example where I'd have to be really careful, same with Rotscale (or not? He's easy as Keiran). Also thinking of skipping skipping Imperial Sanctum and Gates of Madness for now. Any other suggestions?|||I personally always have problems staying alive in most EotN explorables. And watch out for Shiro. Other than that, being careful and knowing when to pull back should be good enough. For vanquishing, always bring a reusable res, and Rebirth is especially handy as you can use your heroes to distract the attention of the foe while you pull back to ... ehmmm.... evaluate the situation :p|||My solution to many HM issues with my 2nd legendary vanquisher was often to have the H+H flagged back, have them cast Protective Spirit and Shield of Absorption on me constantly (just hotkey these and the "target 1st party member"), and kill the entire mob by myself. This 2nd vanquisher of mine is a mesmer.
Doing this was effective - the vanquishing of crap like ice imp clusters or Krytan fire imps was by far easier than it had been on the first vanquisher, but it's really counterproductive to do so with someone who doesn't want to die.
Since then, I haven't revisited all of these areas again. Some as a monk who is vanquishing leisurely together with a mesmer buddy, but that is different. Me and Livia or Ogden replace Alesia+Tahlkora, and I know when not to stand in a H+H cluster and when to preprot with what. So, I don't know if these mobs are easier now, especially with full hero teams (with a full party with people who recover from DP, contrary to the henchmen, who were doomed to accumulate more and more DP.) Also, since then, Panic became what it is now and Spirit Spamming became really productive. Mobs that were very lethal before may be a lot easier now.
But still, I probably wouldn't combine survivor + vanquisher. I can only imagine how frustrating it might be when you are getting surprised by how tough or weird some mobs may be in HM. For instance, I personally on my first vanquisher was quite surprised by how annoying and dangerous humble Grawl Shamans + their buddies in Eastern Frontier could be. Given that you're asking for advice about the danger level of the zones, I gather that you haven't done much vanquishing before, so you'll be in for plenty of surprises.
I am in a similar position as you with my oldest character - no survivor, because she's older than the titles themselves, done all chapters in NM, captured about 80% of all eliteskills. I would very much like to make her a survivor as well, but I wouldn't do it by vanquishing, even though the rewards for the zaishen squish quests are good.
Instead, I would fill some books, stockpile them, grind a little bit for XP in dwarven boxing perhaps, capture the missing elite skills, and then turn in all the books... I guess. I haven't really planned this yet.
Droajam and Rotscale are problematic indeed, by the way. But so are plenty of other surprises, though their lethality depends on your own profession, the team setup and your ability to manage your team with the flags in the middle of a combat situation.|||I'm vanquishing on my necro survivor-to-be. And I vanquished Lathenda Bog this weekend, with the Drunken Shauben Master quest active. Which will cause some highly annoying corsairs to drop on top of you (as I found out...). It took me extra time to vanquish it, but I only had 2 deaths in my party the entire vanquish (once my MM got spiked and once a monk). I pull back, see if there's another way to get to them (more space to run back, less corners) and try to lure as small a group as possible to my (flagged) heroes.
But those areas where there are a lot of AoE mesmers or eles, I try to avoid...
Oh, Silver, as you haven't gotten guardian yet, you'll get a nice amount of XP from the missions and for the book you'll finish per campaign.|||Most areas in EoTN and the southern shiverpeaks (those %@#& ice imps) would scare me a bit. Normal mode ok, but HM vanquish? Depends a lot on your team.
I made the survivor title my priority, and everything else took second place. I captured some easy elites, but didn't finish that title 'till after I had survivor.
I find pretty much all the areas on the small island in Nightfall to be safe, so I'd fallback on those when you can't think of anyplace to go.
Watch the daily zaishen missions - the zaishen experience reward for those is the same in NM, so they can be a very safe, quick way to get a boost on the title. Today's D'Alessio Seaboard is 3000 exp for example.|||Thanks for the tips!
I'm pretty used to HM; I've done some WiK bounties, missions and the odd vanquish before (remember doing Old Ascalon with terrible builds a few years ago), but I don't know about specific annoyances like the mentioned Eastern Frontier, hence the thread. I'm thinking a large part of Ascalon could be problematic. Charr are worse than Juvenile Bladed Termites, need a lot of build compression and there are fewer heroes for stuff to pound on before they see me, any thoughts on that?
Hero-wise I'm pretty much going with the meta rits and mesmers, often with a simple MM and then whatever fits. I play an ele, element depending on area. Has worked wonders so far, Glint went down before I could blink.
I'm primarily aiming for guardian due to the books, so I'll skip a lot of vanqs until survivor is done. Also doing it the Z-quest order for extra exp. Will probably do FoW a couple of times when there are no missions left and then turn the books (and Titan Source) in for the last part.
Oh, and I won't be doing any EotN. Dangerous mobs and I have no interest in doing long dungeons, so I'll never get MotN anyway.|||I won't vanquish areas where I can't bring a party of 8. Maybe a party of 6, but only when I'm sure there aren't any AoE foes around. Otherwise I'll want an extra interrupter, and that's rather difficult without sacrificing damage output.|||Per above, places to vanquish with less than a party of 8 should be approached with suspicion and preperation. I've found that most of the explorable areas and mission pages on the official wiki give info on HM problems that are likely to arise. My suggestion would be to visit the wiki and read about the mission or Vanquish you are about to attempt before diving off the deep end without looking....|||Yeah, I always take a quick look before doing anything serious. I'll stay away from 4-man areas for now, an extra FoW run or two is less risky.
Just did D'Alessio and the health bars barely moved, so the average 6-man shouldn't be a problem. Just have to pull everything onto the heroes and stay back as usual. Then there is always the option of mapping out if things seem to go downhill.|||Quote:

This is the secret to doing HM successfully. Worse scenario - you don't have to worry about trying to rez your heroes who are lying dead among red dots.
