Hello all! I have a question. What is the point in this game? I mean, you can get the strongest (70) armor in the begining of the game but you can still buy one million platinum armor that is same but better looking. So what is the point of farming? Is this game all about fashion?|||Some people like seeing numbers go up rather then experimenting and goofing around and doing stuff. Some people hate GW because most things (stat wise) and the level cap are very easy to obtain. Others love it because you don't have traditional gaming limitations hanging over your head.|||The point is that instead of farming and spending time getting equipment so you can play, the game is open to you. So the point is to have fun, rather than have to grind. I really enjoy playing the game over and over with new characters because of the story and the challenge. Not to mention trying new ways to play it, or hard mode and elite areas.
I've realized that games like Diablo 2 and WoW are time-sinks. Although your gear gets better, so do the monsters... so really, nothing changes. The only thing accomplished is it adds delays to how soon you can complete the game. In GW, you complete the game as fast as your own skills allow.
In GW, you can skip the whole farming and fashion aspect if you want. It's really not that important. What's more prestigious really is what you accomplish... which is cool because everyone's on a level playing ground.|||I'm begining to understand. It's just im not used to games like this... But i cant understand why would anyone waste so mush time to farm platinum for some cool looking armor when u can have the same one almost free. I'm a fan of farming, so can i find anything useful while farming? (stronger armor, weapon...)|||farming in GW is mainly to make platinum...which in turn can be used to buy armor, cool looking weapons, items to fund titles.
All weapon types have a maximum stat set, once you get one with that, it's about looks. you can farm bosses for green (unique) items, often these have special appearances or stats - but since they drop from a set monster, most are fairly common.
Character armor always comes from a crafter, so you aren't going to find that from killing things.|||You can farm all you want for rare items. There just isn't any statistical advantage to most things. It's all cosmetic.
Most things in the game are purely cosmetic. You choose what you want to look like. There isn't one bit of gear that makes you powerful, so you go after the stuff that you like. Some people like the cheaper equipment, other like the expansive stuff. It's up to you. Your build and your teams build and how smart you play is what makes you powerful in GW, not the gear.|||Quote:

The object of the game is to follow the storyline and save the world in each campaign. PvP is loosely related to the storyline lore, but really a separate game many people go pvp after finishing the storyline or others are just exclusively pvp. There are rare items and rare armors in the game to farm but they do not effect game play in any way. People choose to farm items or titles after finishing the storyline as well.|||The point of the game is to improve you skills at playing the game. The idea is that you should only be able to complete certain things if you've learned enough about what you're doing. Gear won't solve the problems for you. This is coupled with the storyline - generally saving something from some sort of great evil thing while picking up new skills along the way.
Beyond completion of the storyline, there are various things people like to do as 'endgame':
- Collect Titles (generally requires that the content be then approached in Hard Mode)
- Finish all Elite Missions (UW/Deep/FoW etc) in normal and hard mode, or farm said areas for rare drops + materials.
- PvP. Because skill really *is* essential there. For me, this is what everything else has been building up to. PvE was a training ground/way to unlock skills and teach me about what different things do/how certain professions work.
- Creating different characters an obtaining certain goals on them (people like to collect one of each profession and make it look as good as possible + get all the skills available for it)
Most people play for a mixture of the above reasons. It's a game that promotes skill over time - spending ages grinding for that special weapon will give you no advantage over someone who did not have the time to farm that same special weapon. Sure, there is vanity, but that's a small aside people invest into as they progress into doing whatever it is they are doing.|||I think everyone else covered most.
The only thing that you'd consider spending any money on to get the best equipments is the modifications for your armors and weapons, and they're not much if you were going for normal purpose ones. For example, in normal mode PvE, upgrades like prismatic insignia on an elementalist or a bow with bow grip of defense do enough good, but prismatic only costs 100g (as of 1/8/2010 23:10 EST, subject to change) and bow grip goes for 500g according to price check forum (again, same time and subject to change).|||Quote:

Some people just really do enjoy mindless, endless, braindead repetition as a means of relaxing, but consider the fact that you may love farming because you've been classically conditioned to by other games like WoW and D2. It's a bit like playing the slots at a casino. Absolutely STUPID would you see it from the outside, but the people playing them think it's the best thing in the world.
Anywho, I'd say give GW a whirl and see if non-farming is exciting for you.
