I'm new to GW, game hasn't even arrived yet lol, but I've tried out a few other MMORPGs and I'm mostly interested in PVP. I've been doing a bit of reading trying to get an idea about the game and just wondered if anyone can tell me what they think is the quickest way to become ready to PVP?
I mean, do I need to start with Prophecies and work my way through the campaigns to understand what I'm doing? Is it worthwhile going to say Factions first to pick up the skills from there, and then going back in order, or will I be too clueless?
Sorry for the newb question. Any advice would be appreciated! |||You'll most likely be doing PvP on a PvP only character. PvP characters start at level 20.
Playing through the campaigns can be useful for unlocking skills and mods/runes. But is not necessary.|||Quickest way to PvP is to roll a PvP character on the character selection screen.
Your character will have some skills available then, no runes unlocked - but just do some random arena or whatever, get your arse handed back to you - but your team will accumulate some kills and Balthazar faction points for you. So, whatever, use the Balthazar faction to unlock useful skills and the runes.
That's for the case that you really only want to do PvP.
If you want a mixture of both, you might want to play a little bit of the PvE content to actually grasp the very basics and to unlock skills for free?|||Thanks. Yeah I'd optimistically hoped it wouldn't be necessary, but probably needed to be successful you think?
I'm not trying to avoid the actual campaigns by any means, can't wait to get started, and read in last few mins some stuff about needing skills from Faction to stand a decent chance. Just usually enjoy the PVP most.|||Quote:

Yeah, thanks alot, posted again before I saw this. Nah I'm really looking forward to the PvE side. Plus, can't see teammates on PVP being very happy with me if I'm diving straight in clueless lol.
You got any thoughts on what would be the best campaign to start on? Obviously need to grasp the basics, but going to be aiming towards the know-how/skills for PVP.|||Somewhat confusing differences between PvP and PvE characters.
PvE:
- Start out at level 1. You'll have to level up on your own.
- Start out with no skills. You'll have to learn any skills you want to use by buying them from trainers, or receiving them as rewards for quests. Any skills you learn are unlocked for use in PvP.
- You'll have to find, buy, or create any weapons you want to use. Any you find unlock mods for use in PvP.
- You'll have to craft and mod your armor yourself. Any armor mods you find are unlocked for use in PvP.
- You can PvP with this character if you like, but "ideal" gear is quite expensive even now.
PvP-only:
- Start out at level 20.
- Start out with every skill any of your PvE characters have ever learned, plus any skill any of your heroes have ever learned, plus any skill you've unlocked with Balthazar faction. (this is subject to the normal limit of 8 skills from 2 professions, but in any town you can change which 8 at will)
- You can create weapons at-will in towns. Weapons you create may have any mods you've unlocked in PvE, plus any you've unlocked with Balthazar faction.
- You can create armor at will in town. Armor you create may have any mods you've unlocked in PvE, plus any you've unlocked with Balthazar faction.
- You can't sell or trade the weapons and armor you create on PvP characters.
- You can't PvE on PvP characters.
- Access to enough skills to make meaningful decisions about your build.
- Weapon mods (like +30 health, 20% chance to ignore 20% of armor, +15% damage while you are above 50% health)
- Armor mods (like +10 armor vs physical attacks, +health, or +energy)
- Any idea how to play the game
"Balthazar faction" is earned by winning in PvP, and can be spent to unlock skills or mods (for PvP ONLY).|||Wow! Thanks alot Really cleared everything up for me. Think I'll be rolling a ranger on NF tomorrow then if it arrives on time.
Thanks
p.s. I've ordered the complete collection so have all 3 campaigns.|||Be warned that after you learn the technical part of the game (i.e. whatever you can learn from getting through the storyline of each campaign), you will still need 6-12 months to learn the competitive play. This is if you actively hunt for the information on this forum, wiki and Team Quitter forums. You will also need an active PvP guild that's willing to teach you.
This is not meant to discourage you, just to give you an idea that you -will- have to do some hard work, and the sooner you start, the better. :) It's also meant to hint that you -will- be completely demolished in PvP in every arena you enter for the first few months - that's until you learn the basics of the builds, battle awareness, teammate awareness, target prioritization, positioning and all the rest, and until you build the friends list. Once past that part of the learning curve, GW PvP gets incredibly entertaining.
Note that unlocking skills itself is not a problem at all, as you only need to have 8 specific skills for each build, and all the right gear - that normally totals up to about 20,000 Balthazar faction, or a few hours of gameplay in one of the low-end arenas - assuming you luck out a bit with winning and make a good use of double weekends and Zaishen rewards.|||Yeah I'm not expecting it to be easy lol. I look forward to the challenge though, that's why I'm more PVP orientated than PVE - usually a lot more challenging. I'll start looking for a guild once I've learnt the ropes.
Do you think Factions is too difficult to start with for a first-time player? Seems to be a bit of debate floating about.
Really appreciate all the great info |||Factions starts out really fast, gets you up to level 20, then throws the "high level" stuff at your pretty quick. Prophecies is the exact opposite. Nightfall is right in the middle, plus you get heroes, and hero skill trainers which don't cost money and unlock skills that can be used in PvP. I start all my new characters in Nightfall now. After a few missions you can move yourself over to the other campaigns. You can move to Eye of the North if you have it when you reach level 10.
A lot of PvP people usually want people to use teamspeak/vent or some varient, so a mic/headset would be useful.
Not the recommended way of doing things, but the in game store does have skill unlock packs for sale.
