Silly newbie help - fighting Charrs and proceeding on the Path to Glory

Hello all! New to Guild Wars here, and I've got what are probably some pretty dumb questions, but so far FAQs and browsing forums have failed me.

We've (my girlfriend and I) completed pretty much all the quests in Ascalon, except for trying to fight the groups of Charr north of the wall. Its usually a group of 4-5 monsters, all level 8 except a level 7 Shaman. We don't last a moment against them - heck, the Shaman kills me with some spell that does lasting damage almost immediately. We're both level 7; she's got a Ranger, I've got an Elementalist.

Do we stand a chance of doing this? Do we need to be higher level? Its not like we can make a bigger party yet!

The second question...we decided to skip that and just continue on along the 'Path to Glory' quest. However, when we tried to we were given a set of options and both picked "My party is ready to continue on". It then told us this was a decision each party member had to make and the only option was to cancel or to "leave your party and continue alone" or something to that effect.

We'd like to continue as a party. What are we missing? We've tried to time or talking to the NPC as closely as possible.

Thanks for any help!|||Sounds like you're still in the starter zone of Prophecies.

The Charr over the wall are a lot tougher, and of a higher level than most of the other stuff hanging around. It's not necessary to fight them and people tend to only go after them once they have hit level 9-10.

The Path to Glory quest, if I remember correctly, is what takes you out of the starter zone you are now in. Once you have taken this 'mini-mission' you will not be able to return to the starter area. You would be in the main game map which is set ahead of time from the starter zone. I don't want to post spoilers, but it's a major in-game event and represents a turning point in your character's history - and yes, you have to enter it alone. However, part of the mini-mission teams up people who have entered at roughly the same time, so there's a chance if the two of you click at the same time that you would be together anyhow.

Once you are out of that mini mission you will be able to team up as before and go on with the story. The starter zone is the only place in the game you will not be able to return to, so make sure you really are ready to leave before you do!|||Quote:

Yes, you do stand a chance against the charr. Your girlfriend needs to bring her pet along with the skill Comfort Animal. Ask her to open the pet control panel and use the control buttons inside of it to launch the pet at the charr before they see you (she needs to select a charr as her target, then press the "attack" icon in the control panel). This will make the charr attack (mostly) the pet, not you two. Sounds nasty, but the pet won't mind. :P

You two follow the pet and kill a charr - use your skills for this, not autoattacking. I would suggest the Flare spell here, maybe Lightning Javelin. Blinding Flash is good as well. Firestorm is probably not so good. Girlfriend needs to use one of the preparations (Ignite Arrows should be better), and then Dual Shot and Power Shot and -perhaps- Point Blank Shot. Feel free to use your secondary classes too, but erm, if it should be /warrior, then don't. Have some attribute points spent to enhance the skills.

You should be able to kill one or two charr, and then you probably need to run away a bit, recover yourselves and revive the pet.

However... Northlands are a completely optional area. You do not have to fight them at all. They're there for lore ("there are charr north of the wall and they're fighting the Ascalonians"), as a hint of things to come, and as a challenge of sorts. You won't get any cookies for fighting the charr, except perhaps a charr bag; which is superfluous if you move on out of pre-searing soon anyway.

I would suggest that you don't bother too much with them for now. Move on. See below.

This quest leads you out of this tutorial area. You will be separated for about 5-10 minutes only, so don't worry. But there is no other way to do this.

I'll explain what is going to happen there:

1.) First, the game checks if anyone else is doing the quest right now.

2.) If there is someone else that does the quest in the next minute or so, you may be forced to do some PvP against each other or against someone else. Since she is your girlfriend, I'd suggest that you just stand there and chat during these 2 minutes, if the game should make you two fight each other, or send the henchmen to fight each other. :)

Fighting your girlfriend might not be the best thing to do for your relationship, so just figure out what's best for you.

This PvP thing isn't 1 vs 1, it's 4 vs 4. Each player has 3 henchmen or other humans in their team.

3.) Then you go on a mini mission with Prince Rurik. You'll kill some grawl and then a charr boss.

4.) Then a cutscene happens and 2 ingame years pass.

5.) You'll be teleported to the explorable called Old Ascalon, and need to walk 30 steps until you're in Ascalon City. It's just around the corner to the right.

I'll also explain why you need to be separated for this, even though it may sound a bit alien to you. Initially, this mission was indeed made for teams of 2. You'd fight together, teamed up with 2 other humans or henchmen, against another team.

Then people started to have "perma-pre" characters. This is a character that doesn't ever intend to leave this tutorial area. People wanted to have such characters because the tutorial areas are remarkably peaceful and pretty, and once you've left the tutorial, you can't turn back.

After a while, some nasty kids popped up who wanted to destroy things that other people had; they targetted these perma-pre characters. By teaming up with them and initiating the countdown for this quest, they could drag the perma-pre out of the tutorial, destroying that character's life-time goal.

The players with their perma-pre characters whined long and loud enough until the developers changed the quest so that you now have to start it while you're alone in your team.

But don't let that stop you and your girlfriend. It's really only 5-10 minutes, and you can team up immediately again once you're in Ascalon City.|||Thanks for the advice! That helps a lot.

Sounds like we'll probably just skip fighting the Charr. Might be an interesting challenge, but I don't see a need to get "ahead of the curve" on power level.

Not being teamed up for a while isn't a problem. Having to briefly battle each other isn't a problem either (we like computer games largely because they give us a break from more competitive board games, but we happily compete as well :) ). Its just that the dialog made it sounds like you could choose to team up, which we wanted to do if possible.

So, thanks again for the rapid replies - I look forward to getting into the real meat of the game!|||Sir, Sir. If you haven't already left, fighting the Charr is one of the most amazing challenges in the game. There are more char behind them, too, and you can use them to reach a great level. There is collector armor that you could use, it makes you a bit stronger. If you have that, then don't worry about this dude's advice for using a pet. If she's got a ranger, that's great.

Use your long bow and shoot them. Then run. And keep pulling them all the way back to the gate and use the guards to help you defeat them. It's easy to do and once you kill a few you will be ready to take them on. I wouldn't progress unless I could beat all of the Char. Not because you have to... but because sooner or later you are gonna want to do it, and it's best to do it early while you still love the game.|||While it's not required, I do encourage you to consider staying in pre-searing until you're able to fight and defeat Charr. There is an opportunity to experiment with strategy, how to move, how to pull, which target to go after first, and so on. Once you master those, the game becomes significantly easier.|||Quote:

Firestorm is probably not so good.

Foes in the aforementioned starter area don't flee from damage-over-time spells, so Firestorm is actually one of the best spells available. It will level an entire group of Charr caster.

My own opinion is that it's not worth it to bother with those Charr. Maybe one night, give it a whirl one or two times, but if it doesn't work, don't get hung up on it. The game you haven't seen yet is HUUUUUGE in comparison, and these Charr as very small beans.|||If you two need any help at all, let me know. I'm always bored and looking for things to do. Will try to help with weapons and builds and maybe even an armor set. (Result of too much time put in to making money. lol) Or I can just be a tour guide and tag along :)

PM me in game if you wish. Salicia Matrye.|||Fighting the Charr could be interesting, but I think we'll probably head onward. I'd rather develop the tactics against more level appropriate foes (and not level up too much ahead of where the normal challenge is). If we play enough I think at some point it would be fun to keep a character in PS Ascalon, and will try it then. In theory :)

Salicia - thanks for the offer! Don't need a guide...yet...but who knows. Maybe we'll bug you if we have questions.|||Well, once you do leave the tutorial area you will have room for another 2 people in your party. Though if you play with your girlfriend you'll probably want henchmen for those slots.

Anyway, good luck :)
