Ranger weapon set

What would be a good complete weapon set for a ranger? I would like to be able to do most everything with this ranger and would like weapons that could do almost any role. And armor, I would like recommendations for how to get armor to work for most everything with the least amount of sets/pieces.

I currently have:

Droknar's recurve bow

the bonus flatbow

a full set of norn armor partially modded

a marksmanship mask

sup vigor

minor expertise

2 radiants

1 vitae

The runes can change and so can the head piece, but what i want is one set of armor that will work for anything I want to do.|||Well for armor, just get the max 70 level for ranger, anything else you get is eye candy.

However... there are times you might wanna switch out for superior runes for given situations. An example would be, if you're running a barrage splinter ranger, then you won't likely need anything from wilderness survival. If you're running a trapper, the opposite is true, you likely won't need your bow.

You can use masks to help switch out for a sup rune of the given need, and have masks with matching stackable attributes for said rune.

You won't want more then one sup rune except the vigor.

You might consider getting a staff for the trapper mode, get one with at least two energy mods on it. The +5 staff head, and the +5e while over 50% or some such.|||Vampiric/Sundering Bow (IMO Vamp is better but sometimes people get lazy and don't feel like switching)

Icy/Fiery/Shocking Bow

Silencing and zealous might be useful at times but with the first two you should be ok. A staff, like Noa mentions, for certain builds might be good too. As far as the type of bow, for dmg I usually go with short, horn, or flat (flat only with RTW). Recurve for interrupts. Having said that, most of the time I just have a long bow with me... the minor differences between only comes into play slightly except in high-end PvP. I interrupt easily from long range in the lower forms with my long bow and as always it doesn't matter one bit in PvE.|||I use the following rune setup on my ranger: Survivor on all pieces. Minor Expertise on chest, Minor Wilderness Survival on gloves, Superior Vigor on pants, Attunement on boots. Then I have a mask for each attribute with a superior rune of that attribute, so switching builds requires nothing more than switching masks.

The Expertise rune on the chest is useful for all Marksmanship, Wilderness, or Beastmaster builds. It does no harm to leave it there when wearing an Expertise mask, though it provides no benefit in that case. The Expertise mask is useful for running builds, touch builds, and Ra/Rt spirit-spamming builds.

The Wilderness Survival rune on the gloves is useful with many builds in other attribute lines, since it supports Troll Ungent, preparations, and nature rituals. Again it does no harm to leave it there when using a Wilderness Survival mask for trapping. However, the benefit is minor and you may choose to use some other rune in place of the minor Wilderness.

The Attunement rune can easily be replaced with whatever you like. Vitae for more health or Clarity to reduce blindness/weakness (useful if you prefer marksmanship builds) are good choices.

For weapons, you will want a good selection of bows and one high-energy staff. Bows should include a recurve and a flatbow, both of which are used by many Marksmanship builds. You may want to experiment with some specialty builds to decide what type to carry as a third bow, but I would say a shortbow would be a good choice.

The high-energy staff is used with touch builds, trapper builds, and full-bore beastmaster builds. It can be a staff for any caster class with any attribute requirement, since you won't be using it to do damage. (I use a Tengu Air Staff from the BMP, for example.) Add an Insightful head (+5e), a Hale & Hearty inscription (+5e^50), and a wrapping of Fortitude (+30hp). Or obtain one of the green staves that has the required mods built in: Traveler's Bo Staff, Staff of the Forgotten (endgame Nightfall reward), Bohdabi's Spire, Staff of the Kinslayer, Staff of Despair, The Mindclouder, Bohdalz's Fury, or Alem's Remedy.|||Are we talking PvP or generic PvE?|||This would be for PvE and low end PvP.

So what I am seeing so far:

I need to get a high energy staff

an elemental bow (what type?)

possibly a vamp bow

Is survivor on all pieces recommended?

Should I get a Spear+Shield?|||Gonna add my 2c where applicable

Depends on the type of play and who you're going to be playing with. For instance, cold damage will come in handy when you are in a party with a necro who brings spinal shiver, and if in case you are with an elementalist who uses mark of rodgort you probably want a fire bowstring. Each of the elements will do more damage to some enemies than others as well (though the difference isn't that much apparent), so it might be interesting to switch elements out in accordance to enemies you'll be facing the most.

It does help but isn't necessary, is what I think.|||Quote:

I'll warn you that the way I choose my weapons and armors can be rather inefficient and can be considered rather noobish by some other members of this forum. However, you may be able to pick a thing or two from my point of view and apply to your selection.

Well let's just say that I usually carry all types of bows with me. Recurve mainly for dazing and interrupting, so I carry a +Daze bowstring on it. Short I'm waiting on a nice blank shortbow to build a +Daze, so I'm currently carrying sundering/30hp. I don't have a great flatbow either, so again I'm just carrying sund/30hp, but I'll probably slap on a cold string if I get a nice blank. Hornbow, I have a +5e and 20% ench for running judge's insight (for fun).

I also happen to carry 3 sets of armors: health, energy, and one for switching out. The third I currently have pyrebound because fire damage generally hits party the hardest and in such cases any kind of damage reduction helps. I usually ends up wearing the energy set, because I found that if I have the other two armors on I tend to repel aggro away too much, making the foes focus on my monks excessively. If you want to carry around SY! on your ranger, then you definitely want health or some kind of extra armor.|||My ranger's PvP weaponsets are:

Recurve Bow: Poisonous + Fortitude - for most stuff, interrupting and running around between stuff.

Longbow: Crippling + Fortitude - for interrupting long casts if you're just out of range and catching people who are legging it. Just hope they don't strafe your Cripshot/Melshot/Pin Down.

Flatbow: I have poisonous on mine, but you might want to see what other say about it. Mainly, it's for getting at NPC's without aggroing them.

Shield and Sword: both with fortitude - just for if you're coming under a lot of hate, and need a little extra health and a little more armor to make sure you get away/get safe. I have a vs Slashing inscription on mine, although vs Piercing is useful as there's always a lot of assassins around. Some people make a shield for each damage type, but for low end PvP that's not such a big deal.

I use survivors on my ranger's armor, as they already have inbuilt defense vs elemental damage, and can keep melee at bay with cripple. I do have blind reduction and cripple reduction runes too, but you may not find these as useful. I just think it can save me from having to use Mending Touch on a few occasions with shorter lasting applications of such conditions (such as monk using Return against you).

For PvE, I just use the same armor set. The advantage you have with rangers is that they can happily wield hammers or scythes or what have you in PvE, so you can experiment with different weapons for different types of roles. It just depends on how many different sorts of things you plan on doing with your ranger.
