Guild wars questions.

Hi there.

MMO player here, loved warcraft, quit it, moved onto runes of magic but that was poor, moved onto allods (an amazing game been ruined) and now im looking to find another to kill some time. Im looking at guild wars 2, and have looked at the website. How does guild wars and will guild wars2 compare to wow? I liked wow, but dont mind tyring new things? Do you think it could compete with wow? I like the idea of being at the start of a new game.

So, the questions, will trialing (and continuing if i enjoy) be worth it and help for the release of GW2? And, whats the timescale for the release of GW2?

Many thanks,|||GW doesn't compete with WoW, because it's an entirely different sort of game. The focus is entirely different. GW has fast levelling, standardized gear and a more direct storyline - as well as being heavily instanced rather than open-world persistent. The endgame is more focused on PvP or title maxing, with a few elite areas (raid type things) but nowhere near as many as WoW.

Can't tell you anything about GW2 vs WoW. We don't know much ourselves at this stage. GW2 release is still set for sometime in 2011, probably towards the later part of the year.|||Ok, thanks for the information Kokabel, much appreciated. I was going to say, on the GW2 website, theres alot of nothing news imo. Art, etc, thus me asking on here.Im not so keen for the highly instanced, and what is standardized gear exactly? is it what it says on the tin? :P

Im basicly looking for a quality MMO and continue to fail to find one! :(|||Quote:

GW2 isn't out yet. It won't be out for some time yet (how long? we don't know). Just about any aspect of it is still subject to change, and as such hasn't been released yet. We've gotten our first real information in the past 3 days, and I expect this will continue for at least a little while.

In GW each weapon has a damage range. For a sword, the best possible damage range is 15-22. You can buy swords that do 15-22 damage in major cities in the latter part of the game. A sword can have three modifiers (hilt, pommel, inscription). There are a variety of effects that you can get in each modifier, but each one has a maximum. It isn't hard to find or buy a perfect hilt, pommel, and inscription to attach to your max damage sword. All weapons are like this.

In GW, each piece of armor has a built-in armor value, a replaceable rune, and a replaceable insignia. Again, you can buy maximum AC armor in major cities in the latter part of the game, and any runes or insignia you might want are reasonably priced.

The basic idea is that you don't have to spend ages leveling up to maximum level, then spend ages grinding for gear in the first set of dungeons, then use that gear to grind for better gear in the next set of dungeons, etc. You level up quickly, you get perfect armor and weapons very nearly handed to you, and after that the only way to advance is to improve your own skill at playing the game.

This is doubly true in PvP - it isn't your level vs your opponent's level, your gear vs your opponent's gear, or even your class vs your opponent's class. It is your team's skill (at setting up a build capable of facing any threat, and playing that build) against the opposing team's skill.

I should also point out that in GW *everything* is instanced, except towns. You won't meet anyone except your own party and NPC's, except in towns. This means no non-consensual PvP, no spawn camping, no kill stealing. By some definitions, this makes GW not actually an MMORPG.

GW2 will almost certainly have the same weapon and armor systems, but will be much less instanced.|||At this point, you can buy the 3 chapters plus the expansion of GW for about the same price you'd spend for a month or two of WoW, not even including purchase price.

As you can tell from the forums, a lot of people still think this is an awesome game (I think it's probably the best game I've ever played, and I've been playing video games for a loooong time), so if you like the fantasy genre, I think you'll like GW.|||If you're still not sure, give the trial a go.|||Quote:

Judging by your initial post, you seem to be looking for a WoW-replacement. And the best WoW-like MMO is... well, WoW. Any other MMO you visit will then be judged by the features that WoW has but said MMO doesn't, and thus it will fall short from your expectations.

Mind you, I'm not trying to tell you to 'go back to WoW'. But I think you're asking the wrong question. It should be: how is game X different from WoW in cool ways? Rather than 'how does it compare?', which in practice comes down to 'what does it lack?'.

And the answer to that question is: GW is so different from EQ/WoW game model that comparisons don't really make sense. In particular, there are no raids, and neither leveling nor gear are significant parts of the game. Now read the wikis for a bit (both official and unofficial), fetch a trial and give it a try. :)|||My first impressions of GW2 was, "Oh no, another World of Warcraft/Everquest game..." Judging from the stuff I read off of the official GW wiki, it seems to be leaning towards that as far as game mechanics, but the races will be...different...the world will be...different...it will not be "just another WoW/EQ". The similarities are there, but as per articles and general knowledge, as someone said, everything news related is subject to change as far as the game itself. If you are deciding on a good MMO game, I generally prefer GW highly over others, but I miss a lot of things from EverQuest. I'm torn between the two right now, and I'm hoping that GW2 will be a good middle ground.

Test out Guild Wars, see how you like it, the storyline, the character development, the community, etc. Go back to the wikis every now and again, read up on anything new, get opinions from the discussions, and when it comes out, we may see you there.|||The biggest things I find lacking in Guild Wars (I played GW for four years, have moved on to WoW):

No auction house. Anything you want to sell either goes to the merchant, is sold via "WTS blah blah blah" in cities (and no trade chat spanning cities, Kamadan district 1 doesn't see chat from Kamadan district 2, much less spanning chat across to Lion's Arch). Or sometimes you can sell through a third party auction website, but that brings up...

No mail. You can't send messages or items to other players if they're offline. So anything you sell will require "face to face" interaction.

Dead cities. The number of NPCs in a city is really abysmal. It's depressing.

No jumping. And I don't mean hopping around like a deranged jackrabbit. I mean... let's say you have a flight of stairs to go down. In WoW you can choose to jump down and skip the stairs (and possibly take fall damage). In GW... it's all walking. Similarly, with no swimming, a lot of the areas feel very odd in terms of arbitrary movement restrictions. Invisible walls are no fun.

The lack of professions means that there's little to do once you've completed the storylines. The titles (a.k.a. achievements) aren't very interesting in comparison to WoW's achievements. "Yay, I spent 1000 real world minutes with my character drunk, and had to click once every minute!" Ugh.

However. I did have fun for four years in the game. There are a lot of positives to the game, and the lack of a subscription fee makes it very easy to justify.

I won't go over the positives, though, simply because lots of others here have already done so -- I would recommend at least trying the game. Unlike WoW, Guild Wars starts off with the story pretty much right away. There's a much stronger storyline in GW, so even with the trial you can get a decent feel of the game.|||that is the ultimate for me too, subscription fees! that darn 14.99 a mo. started adding up in WOW I decided to research different mmo's out there and for me my question was which game out there will give WOW a run for its money, hmm???, after researching I decided upon GW's, why? a nicely sized community over 6 mill copies sold so I won't be alone most times in servers, 2ndly the subscription fees, I spend 40 bucks on all three games and don't have to pay for anything else unless I go to their virtual store, At first I was a little hesitant on a lot of things they didn't have like the no jumping, seems like moving in game was built on top of a waypoint scale, a big clue to it is if you party with someone and need to find them in town, double click their icon and you automatically move to them, also no mounts yikes! all the stuff the previous post mentioned and their graphics are subpar compared to WOW's, but somehow the mechanics of the game became addictive and I became engrossed with the storylines and quests. At the end I realize this is a great stand alone game with a few added features for mmo thats it, not a detailed world like WOW by any means but it holds its own. In short I'll play this all the way through, spend no more money for several months on games, play this non stop till I cap everything like I did with WOW or find it boring then do more researching and choose between wow's cataclysm or GW2. And I'll be rooting bigtime! for GW2 and that it will be an amazing overhaul because I love their reasonable game prices and no subscription fees w/virtual stores, so I can spend the money when I want and how much I want, rather than force to pay monthly fees if you wanna play in WOW's world. Not only is there a monthly fee but an extra charge for the game CATACLYSM as well. So you buy the game for alot already only to find out in order to play the brought game, you have to shell more money just to play it, leaves a very bad taste in my mouth, Blizz are truly greedy developers.
