[:1]Hey. So I recently found out about guild wars 2 (which looks amazing), and upon realising i'm going to have to wait a long time till it comes out, I thought i'd give the original a try (plus maybe get some of those hall of monuments things).
So I played on the free trial for an hour or so and i've decided to buy the "guild was trilogy", which I believe includes the first 3 games.
I'd be extremely grateful if you could help me answer a few questions i've been having:
1. What primary and secondary classes would you reccommend for a beginner?
2. Did I hear right that the max level is 20? If so, how long does it take to get there? Also, how much of the content is aimed at max level players?
3. Are character names unique? So would I have to find myself a name that no one has ever used before, or could I call myself any old name which people have already used?
4. Can the game be played solo? or are teams required for certain parts?
5. Do a lot of people still play it?
6. Which of the 3 games would you reccommend I try first?
7. Do you know how much space it will take up on my hard drive?
Thanks |||1. Personally, I think your primary should depend on what style of play you enjoy. For me, it was Ranger in the original Guild Wars (now called Prophecies). All professions will take you some time to get the most out of them, but you can contribute something with all of them from the beginning too. Basically, my suggestion is pick whatever sounds like the most fun to you and go. It's easy enough to start another character if you feel you're not into your current choice. For secondary, I'd suggest mainly sticking with your primary starting out. You'll have to pick a secondary early on, but it doesn't mean you have to use it.
2. Yes, max lvl is 20. How long it takes depends a lot on which campaign you start out in and your playing style. If you want to get there as fast as possible, I believe Factions is probably the fastest. Prophecies is definitely the slowest. In Prophecies, I'd estimate anywhere from 25-33% might be considered max lvl content depending on how you count it. For Factions, once you get off the starter island it can be considered max lvl content, I'd say around around 85%. For Nightfall, it would be also close to once you get off the starter island although some might consider it a bit past that, I'd say around 85%.
3. Yes, names are unique. Also, names are meant to be given and surname, but any name with a space in it will do.
4. You can "solo" pretty much the whole game. I say "solo" because you can fill your party with AI controlled henchmen or heros. Henchmen have fixed skillbars and you have limited control over them while you can assign skills and have more control over heros. I'd recommend reading up on heros to get more details if you choose to start in Nightfall. At first your choices will be limited since they can only have skills that are unlocked in your account so they might not seem that great at first.
5. There's still a good number of people that are active. It can be hard at times to find a PUG for some areas but if you find a guild or have friends to help it shouldn't be too bad since you can always fill out your party with henchmen or heros.
6. Even though it's the slowest by far, I'd recommend Prophecies. It's slow pace might be good for someone starting out... plus I like to play things in order. If you want to get into it fast, I'd recommend Nightfall. Leveling might be just a little bit slower than Factions but you get heros.
7. My GW folder is currently 3.83 GB... so somewhere around there.
Enjoy!|||Thanks a lot for the in depth response! You answered all my questions and more
I think i'll start out as an elementalist, since that seems like fun. Not sure what to use as my secondary yet...
Anyway, thanks a lot!|||In general for starting out I would reccommend going Monk for secondary, since it will give you access to a reusable resurrection skill. Handy if you are the only person left standing so you can get your team up without having to start over in missions.
You can anyway switch secondaries lates (~halfway into the game), so it is not like it is a permanent choice.
Good luck!|||Quote:

Personally I keep having reservations about recommending Prophecies to a beginner. The campaign is slow, outdated, tiresome and does imuo no longer represent today's state of the game. It's much easier when you can just go there with an existing char and skip most of its (slow) parts.
Nightfall however is an excellent campaign to start with...
(It's not that I'd say Prophecies is bad and it might be well worth to start a char there later on, personally I just know that I would have quit GW after a few days had I started there)|||Prophecies is terribly maladapted to lvl 20 chars. So it's slow and all for the first timers, but really too easy otherwise. Nightfall is a good place to start... but I do start some characters in Prophecies so I can enjoy that. Also, presearing can only be done with a Prophecies character.|||It depends on the beginner. I came into GW with no previous MMO experience and only a bit of FPS, being primarily an adventure gamer. My only online gaming experience was Uru, a not-so-massively MO adventure/rpg. Starting in Prophecies worked quite well for me, and had just the pace I needed.
As you can guess from the above, story and exploration potential is what attracts me to a game, and Prophecies certainly has that. Factions is pretty frustrating to an explorer the first time through (all the locked gates), so I'm glad I didn't pick that or I might never have stuck with it. Nightfall is good for exploration and story, but Istan can be a bit grindy if you don't know what you're doing, and a bit more confusing because you need to figure out heroes and shrine bounties along with the other stuff a beginner has to learn. Prophecies is a good middle ground.|||Thanks for all the posts :)
I think i'll probably start with prophecies, since i'm new to the game.
How do the different campaigns work with your account? Do I have to fully complete one campaign before moving on to the next one? or can I move between them?
Also, just wondering, do the newer games have improved graphics?
Thanks for the monk tip too. I think i'll do that. I still don't know which primary class to choose though. Which would you say is the most fun?|||Quote:

You'll reach a point in each storyline where you can pickup a quest to travel to other campaigns. They're all before the halfway point, so no, you don't have to finish one to move onto the others. Once you unlock the other continents, then you can travel freely between them.

There are some improvements, but nothing earth shattering.

It depends on you. Do you have any class preferences in other games? For example, some people love melee, some hate it. Do you have a play style you like? If you tell us a little more about what you like to do in game, then we can make a recommendation.
-T|||Thanks for the answers teina. According to play, the guild wars trilogy doesn't come out until friday, so I thought i'd ask a few more questions which have arisen :)
I'm still unsure as to which class to choose. Can I start a paragon or something in prophecies?
I've had a few ideas:
- Necromancer / monk <- what is a necromancer's regular attack?
- Warrior / monk
- Elementalist / monk
Which of those are the most fun / effective? Do you have any other suggestions?
Also, say if I complete the first campaign and get to lvl 20, what would I gain by completing the other campaigns on the same account? Why not make 3 different accounts and get to level 20 on all of them?
And can I trade items between accounts?
Thanks.
