No, because downloading and installing the game is free and anyone can do it (therefore, you can install the game from the disk to multiple places). When you buy a physical copy of the game, the only thing you are really buying is the access code. The disk really doesn't matter. The disk has the same stuff as the downloadable client.

You may want to check the folder you are trying to install to. I've found that sometimes, even with Administrative access, some folders won't let you write to them. Maybe the folder is set to "Read-Only"?

(nearly) Complete Salvage Item List?

[:1]Hello fellow GW Mates,

after hours spending google-woogeling the net for a complete list with the items and their normal and rare salvage results, it always directs me here: http://www.gwonline.net/page.php?p=90, but apparently this page isnt active anymore, at least, I havent found it here either.

And yes, I know every item is available on the wiki sites, each item on a separate page, which isnt handy imo.

Soooo, does anyone know where to find that list? I had only success so far in finding a list in german language, with over 1000 items which would take quite a while to translate...

Any help very much appreciated ^_^

Daks|||Hi Daks,

That page is from a very long time ago. We got rid of all of them because it was cumbersome to update and wikis fill that role better than we could.

If it's any consolation, I'm pretty certain that the list we did have only had Prophecies items and maaybe Factions. It would still have been missing all the items from Nightfall and EotN.

I'm not sure if this will help you but there is a category for each salvage mat on the official wiki. So if you're in need of wood for example, you can visit this page and it will list all of the items that might salvage to wood.

Parent category:

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Categ...fting_material

Hope that helps!

Bella|||Thanks for the reply and info! I know of the existence of these pages on Wiki ... well I hoped there was an easier solution for all the salvageable items (and trophies as well!).

Well to contribute a bit I could put the list we're translating here, when it's finished ^_^

Help me enjoy Guild Wars

[:1]I played Guild Wars when it was first released and really enjoyed the PVP but as it wasn't my copy I stopped playing it soon after.

A year and a half ago I purchased the game again and played for a bit but I was really confused on what I was supposed to be doing and PVE was quite boring and I wasn't getting new skills.

I'm going to try it again but can I get some advice as to what I should do? What is the main attraction of Guild Wars?|||In order for us to address the specific question of what to do, we need to know a couple things. What version of the game did you buy? What continent did you start your character on?

In general the game is very linear if you own one chapter. If you own several, it can get a bit confusing part-way through. The mechanisms for "missions" -i.e. the main story line- is different for many of the chapters.

As for the main attraction of Guild Wars for me personally... it was the spiritual successor to Diablo 2 at the time. No monthly fee, online game, fully instanced, cooperative and competitive aspects. Bonus: the concept of "building a deck" like in Magic: The Gathering collectible card game. Also, the no-grind philosophy (low level cap, easy leveling through story advancement, easy access to max-stat gear)|||I'd say for PvE, the main attraction is initially the campaigns. You have 4 of them (1 per game), each filled with a lot of good interesting missions. When you complete that, EotN has nice dungeons too. The missions and dungeons make for some good varied gameplay content, which I find is lacking in other MMOs I tried.

I really enjoy GW also for it's replay, namely getting titles like Protector, Guardian, and MotN.

GW is very much a team game. It's up to you how you prefer to make your team. It's easier to play it with heroes and henchmen (and by easier, I mean easier on your schedule), but if you want to play with people then I suggest you find a good alliance. Most players nowadays have maxed characters so it's hard to find people to play early-game content with... but fortunately the early-game is short and past that everyone is at the same level...

Good luck!|||It depends on what you are looking for in the game.

For me at least GW is all about the PvP. However some players play the game without touching PvP and still love it.

If you hated the PvE content there is new content called 'War in Kryta' which was released over the last few months. The mobs in this content had better ai and better builds as well as a greater mixture of builds. I found this to be more interesting than most of the other general stuff pve has to offer.

My advice for starters is to get stuck into some pve until you feel you are getting to grips with the skills and mechanics in the game. Then try out PvP if that is your primary interest. Random Arenas and Alliance Battles make decent starting points for low end PvP stuff and are also more forgiving when compared to the more hardcore formats of Heroes Ascent and Guild vs Guild.

Some resources to help you on your way:

GW Wiki: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page

PvX Wiki: http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page|||I'm currently downloading the game now and I can't remember which game I bought. I'll get back to you guys in a bit.|||What are the usual speeds you get when downloading new areas?|||I can't exactly answer your question, but you should do an -image command, which downloads all the missing files at once.

Better do it over night, or during work etc. since it might take quite a while depending on your connection, but that'll keep you from lagging due to background downloads and so on.

If you don't know how to, make a shortcut of the gw.exe, open properties for the shortcut, and then add " -image" (without the tags) to the end of the target line.

Remember the space needs to be there.

What to buy?

[:1]Hello,

I would like to start play Guild Wars but I dont know what I have to buy. I would like to have complete game.

So I found that If I buy

Guild Wars Trilogy

Guild Wars: Eye of the North

I will have every part of game but I am little bit confused about this:

Guild Wars Bonus Mission Pack

https://secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/St...tem&item_id=64

Guild Wars PvP Access Kit

https://secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/St...tem&item_id=62

What is it good for? It adds some content or not? What about unlock skill packs? Do I need them or they will be unlocked during game play?|||The Bonus Mission Pack is extra content you can play to understand some of the lore and stories of the Guild Wars Universe - it is not required to complete the game, it gives no edge over those who don't have it and is there just for extra fun.

I don't have it myself as I don't trust NCSoft with handling my financial data and they didn't offer another way to pay for it at launch.

I've been told it is a fun time waster but not worth the money by some friends.

The PvP (Player versus player) access kit if for people who only want to play against other players in head to head battles - Very popular past time in Guild Wars. People who buy that don't play through the storyline or fight against monsters and bad guys. People who do play PvE (Player versus environment) slowly pick up all the skills of the game from skill trainers in outposts and cities. PvP players get all of these skills at once - but can never visit any location outside of the PvP battle area.

I'd say you have made the right choice to understand the game. The Trilogy and Eye of the North will let you understand the mechanics of the game and pick up skills and how to use them over time. It will take you quite a while to complete all of the content you've got there already and so you won't be bored.

The great thing about the pack you have there is that if you ever fancy trying out PvP then you can do so whenever you want - the only limiting factor being that you may not have access to all the skills available.

Remember though that only 8 skills can be carried at any time and cannot be swapped for others whilst in battle (You need to be in an outpost to change them) so you could still have lots of fun in PvP as well as having access to all the locations, monsters and stories that the PvP only guys cannot get to.

I hope this helps and welcome to the forums!

-Art

PS: PvP only guys are pretty hardcore and it's not an experience I'd recommend to someone for a first go at Guild Wars. Once you get into the mechanics though there are plenty of folk who will help you hone your skills down and get you good. I'd say stick to PvE for the moment.|||You made the right choice with the Trilogy plus EotN. I started out with just Prophecies, since I didn't know if I'd like the game, but I hadn't played very long before I went and bought the rest.

The BMP can be worth while if you like lore. The missions are fun and some of the weapons you can obtain are great looking. But there is limited replay value in the missions, so some people don't find it worth the money. I think the missions are a little too challenging for a beginning player to really enjoy, and a beginner won't yet have met the characters featured in the BMP stories, so there is no need to add it right away. Wait and make your decision about this after you've played the regular game for a while and learned the main story.|||I'll bump this since I got a question about buying the game.

What's the best site to buy CD-Keys for this game ? (trilogy + EotN)

I got told to check offgamers.com and they got really good prices for them, but some people are saying I could get my key blacklisted from there. Is it true ? Anyone bought from them ?|||Quote:

I would imagine that the best site to buy CD-Keys for this game would be the manufacturer's/publisher's website.

For instance: http://www.guildwars.com/products/guildwars/default.php

$19.99 digital copy.|||Quote:

Yeah, I wouldn't trust outside places, unless they are a well known store, like GameStop or something. For all you know some of these websites that sell keys could very well be selling you keys that are already in use or something.

Stick with this...NCsoft store

You could probably even just download the client from www.guildwars.com, and then buy the stuff through the in-game store. I don't think you need a key to do it that way.|||The other option would be to buy unopened boxes from trustable sites (like amazon and newegg). I heard keys can be bought from ANet through Steam as well, though I never tried it myself.

I wouldn't buy from that store, because it sells in-game currency and used accounts, albeit for other games. I agree that they have a good chance of selling unusable keys.|||Quote:

If you do that, then I think the game is launched through Steam though, isn't it? Anybody who currently has GW through Steam (not added to steam later on, actually got it through steam) can confirm this.|||I've been looking around for Eye of the north at a good deal anywhere (I got copies way back when for 15 bucks from gamestop)

Lately only the trilogy can be found, if even that.

I gotta wonder how reputable some of the ebay/amazon sellers are in regards to legit boxes and keys.|||I would avoid the official store if at all possible. Actual, physical stores sell GW for MUCH cheaper than the official online store.

If reaching somewhere that sells it isn't possible, I'd check out the big name game store websites first.

Impressions of newcomer + few Q

[:1]Hello,

I started GW few days ago. Just started with Prophecies campaing. I like it. I am done with Presearing Ascalon and now questing in Ascalon.

I am trying to do every possible quest in area. Sometimes its look like Ascalon is dead city only few players at town but I am playing with henchmans so its ok.

1) I have question regarding to armor. World drop is not very good in area and still i am do not really understand stats which my R/Mo needs.

There are 2 merchants in town who sell armor for some fur. Its worthy to buy this or there is other way to get better armor?

2) Secondly I think that I spend my skill points to skill which I dont want :D I still have some skill points left but I am afraid if I will be missing them in the end.

3) Its possible to level up / gear up / skill up your companion eg. my cleric is only lvl 3 and i am lvl 8.

4) Any other suggestions to my gameplay what should I do or some interesting things? Cos I am just doing every possible quests which I can :) If there is something what I should know or something which I missed, you can tell me also :)

Thank you |||1) Yes and no. There are armor collectors spread throughout the world. They exchange drops of a certain type against armor parts. While you are still leveling, getting collector armor is sometimes a nice way to save money. I'd definitely recommend buying armor when you reach max level though, if not sooner. As for the ones in Ascalon, it's the one armor I'd be sure to buy if I had money for it - but make sure you buy from Corwen (Banoit also sells armor, but his armor isn't as good).

2) Generally, spend as many skill points as you want. Even after hitting max level, you will keep getting skill points, so eventually you'll have more than you can spend (most of my characters have hundreds of unspent skill points). However, especially if you are in Prophecies, use the skills that you get from skill quests.

3) If you mean the henchmen, no you can't level them up yourself. Their level depends on the town or outpost you get them from. For example, the henchmen in Ascalon City will always be level 3, while the ones in Piken Square are level 6, etc.

4) Guild Wars isn't like most MMOs. You're still leveling up, so try to do as many different things as possible. Try new skills, try to combine them in different ways. Do quests, explore, see what happens when you do stuff. When you feel ready, move on the story by doing missions. The first one is kind of hard to find - it's next to Ascalon City. Go inside Ascalon city, up the big stairs, turn right and keep walking to find a portal. Go through to reach the mission outpost. Missions are sort of big quests that are ran in special instances, and they are the meat and bones of the actual campaign.|||A couple notes to add on.

1) When you say Ascalon seems dead, are you in the American district? American is where almost everyone from around the world hangs out (in any/all towns and outposts.) Also there may be multiple districts, so if you're in Ascalon American District 4, there may be no one there, but District 1 may be filled to capacity.

Check your location and district in the upper left hand corner drop down menu. Usually only the major cities have multiple districts, but still, in American you will be more likely to see other players anywhere.

And an add on to that point, I personally would rather play with henchmen especially at that level, so that you can take your time, do all the side quests, explore the game, etc. Most players have been there down that so would rush you WAY faster than you want to go.

2) Two or the three other GW products you don't own do offer "henchmen" that you can level. Once you unlock them they are permanently yours and you can equip them and level them as you see fit. They are called "heroes." So look forward to that!|||Jam gives great advice. A few extra notes on armor:

An armor set from Corwen in Ascalon City is good enough to last you all the way into Kryta, so you don't need to buy a set in Yak's Bend when you get there. In Kryta, you can get a higher mid-level set in Beetletun or travel from Lion's Arch to another campaign to buy a max-level set (if you own any other campaigns or EotN).

The maximum armor rating for a ranger is 70. In Prophecies, the first armor with max rating you can find will be collector armor in the Crystal Desert. The first max armor you can buy will be in Droknar's Forge, after you get through the Crystal Desert. However, max armor is available for purchase right away if you travel to Boreal Station (starting point for EotN), Kamadan (Nightfall), or Kaineng Center (Factions) when you reach Lion's Arch.

I would advise not bothering with collector armor. It is no better than the sets you can buy, and it will take forever to get the trophies to trade for it and find the collectors with the pieces you need. You will have the cash and materials to buy a set long before you would get all the collector pieces.|||Hi one more note regarding fur. There is a collector in Ascalon City that will trade you fur in exchange for Charr Hides. Might make the cost seem a little less steep to you!|||In the upper right corner of this forum, there's a link to Collector Finder, which is a set of interactive maps showing where the collectors are, what they collect, and what they give you. Personally, I would recommend using the collectors when you can, but don't go out and farm for items. For example, in your exploration of Old Ascalon, you'll probably get plenty of Fetid Carapaces. You may want to save some for the collector.

Money and materials are going to be a challenge early in game. Don't bother farming at this early stage, it won't be efficient. However, try to save as much as you can and don't buy unnecessary things. For example, don't bother buying weapons at this stage. The money is better saved for the next armor upgrade. See this guide for some suggestions on how to save money. BTW, there is a sticky at the top of this forum that has links to other useful guides.

For materials, research your profession's armors on the wiki. When you pickup drops, check the wiki and see if that drop will salvage into the materials you need. Once you've done a few, you'll get a feel for what items tend to salvage into what materials. If you find blue/purple/gold items, make sure you use an ID kit on it. If it says "highly salvageable", salvaging it will give you extra materials than a normal item. This is a good way to build your materials storage, even if you don't need some materials right now.

On the topic of salvaging, colored weapon and armor drops will usually have modifiers. For example, you might find a "Fiery Long Sword of Fortitude". This would have a Fiery mod (fire damage) and a Fortitude mod (+HP). Using Expert Salvage Kit (not normal one) you can pull these mods off and use them to upgrade other weapons later. Armor drops work the same way, except you can sell armor mods to the Runes Trader available in some towns. It's worthwhile to know which insignias and runes are worth money and which ones are junk by visiting the trader and checking out the going price. It's also worthwhile to know which ones you might want to keep for later. Keep in mind though that when you salvage for materials, you will destroy the item. When you salvage for runes and mods, you have a chance of destroying the item. So if salvaging for mods, make sure you grab the one you want first, in case you destroy it on the attempt.

Hi, I am new here.

[:1]Hi i new to this forum and wanted to introduce my self. so... Hi. I am pretty new to GW i haven't played in a couple months and i am starting to get back into it. when i did play i was a complete noob and i still am. So if you have any tips for a new player they would greatly appreciated.|||http://guildwars.incgamers.com/forum...d.php?t=483424

That's probably a lot of reading though.

It can help to join a guild that likes to teach new players how the game works.

Best thing is to just go out and play. If something seems too hard or you think something should be easier to do, ask someone or search around the threads I linked or this forum. Probably someone else has asked the same question. In fact, if memory serves, there have been a few "new to the game" threads in the last few weeks, so if you just look at some of the older threads here, there have been some pretty good summaries of things to know lately.

Welcome aboard and hope you enjoy the game.

The serial code is apparently automatically applied to the account.

I bought this the same day it came out and it was automatically applied to the account. I was not given and did not have to enter a serial code.

It shows up as a separate key in the Manage Keys option, but does not show you the serial code.

There is an actual serial code of course, it's just automatically applied when purchased through the online store, so you don't see it. Not sure if you get a code you apply yourself if you buy it through NCSoft's website.

**As The Pointless pointed out, you do in fact get an email with the serial code, but it's applied automatically, so it's just for your records.

It gets auto-applied to your GW account the same as if through the ingame store, though if you have more than one GW account attached to your NCSoft Master account and lacking said key, it'll ask you which one you want it attached to.

You'll still get the key sent to you via email, for safe keeping, but you don't actually get to see the full code until then.|||Quote:

Now that you mention it, I did get an email from buying it in the online store and the key code was in it. Didn't notice that being there before.

Good to know. Thanks Mr. Not So Pointless.

GW On A Flash Drive?

[:1]I was wondering how to put Guild Wars on a flash drive. I have put other programs on one but not a game. I want it on my flash drive so i wont have to install it on my schools computers. I have a 4GB a 2GB and a 1GB.|||Will it work? Yes.

The . "-image" 'd dat file is near 4 GB, a bit more I think, so you'd need a bigger one to not install on the school computer. Also, while it works, you probably won't have good performance, was pretty choppy when I tried it out quite some time ago.|||There's some registry keys associated with Guild Wars (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ArenaNet\Guild Wars). I'm not sure if they're required or not

Either way, installing Guild Wars on a flash drive will definitely use up the write cycles on the flash drive quickly|||If I recall, GW will use the dat file in the directory listed in the registry for both game playing and -image. However, GW should create the entries if they don't exist, or fix them if they're wrong. The registry is only of concern if you want to run multiple instances of GW at the same time.

-T|||You're going to want at least the 4g drive. If you can get an 8g, that'd be better.

The game still needs some permissions though to work right.

School computers will sometimes have port blockers, or other security programs that require you to have admin permission to use them. (win7 is notorious for this I notice)

Still, never hurts to try.|||Running a video game on school computer sounds ridiculous and inappropriate. I suggest you keep up with school lessons while you are in school, and play the game at home when you have some spare time. If you have free time even while in school you should waste it with your friends.

Have some dignity kid, you don't want to be THAT MUCH addicted to a stupid video game.|||Quote:

I don't think GW gets updated anywhere near enough for that to be an immediate problem. That's if I'm even understanding the flaws of flash memory correctly.

In any case, if it is that much of a worry, look into a better-known brand name stick (like SanDisk) to hold the client rather then the cheapo sticks as they're more likely to be of superior quality and cope with more rewrites before failure, not that this is an actual guarantee of that.|||I was using a school computer as an example. lets say I go to a friends house and I want to show them the game. What if I want to play it at a library. how about another computer in my house that I do not want to install it on. I am usually done with all of my lessons at school and in study we cant talk so I could play it while I don't have anything to do. My school work always comes before video games.

Thanks you for you input.|||I tried this once in college, but I found that the university computers had a registry issue. Even though the files are on the flash drive, the Gw.exe file checks for a registry entry to see if it's installed yet on that particular machine. In your case, it probably won't be, which means it will try to install itself (read: add a registry entry for Guild Wars), and this may or may not be permitted by your school's IT department.

However, I did manage to install it on my network drive at work.

To summarize, the game must install itself to run. If you're just trying it at a friend's house, you're probably fine. At school, however, you may not have administrative privileges to install/run it.

Regardless, don't worry about write cycles. It's not as though the Gw.dat file is re-written every second, and given that most flash memory can undergo around 100,000 write cycles, it shouldn't be a problem for a few years.|||A flash drive can handle more data written to it. If anything, as long as it's in a USB 2.0 port, it'll react fairly quickly. same issue if you use a portable harddrive.

Like Roy says, the main times you will have issues are on machines that aren't set up for higher level access.

Usually these are machines at schools, public machines, and some work computers.

Another thing you should be aware of, is that the game will install some shortcuts to the desktop and startfiles sometimes. If you're on a machine you don't want people knowing you're playing games on, you need to watch that.

(deleting shortcuts and then empty recycle bin, or even going into recycle bin, and deleting just those shortcuts, as some people may toss a bunch of stuff into recycle, but then later want it back, and then realizes someone's been frigging on their machine.)

As far as the morality of this, playing at school or work... that's not really in our place to say, but suffice it, try and get your regular work done first.

And try not to get in groups where they need you to stick around, only you can't because you're on a borrowed machine, and suddenly have to bail.

Oh...

One other thing to note. Be careful when messing about on an external machine.

They do sometimes have keyloggers on them. A suggestion in that regard, put a text file on the thumb or HD you have the game on, with your user name and pass, and then just use cut and paste to put those two items in. That way you're not typing anything in.

What is going on?

[:1]I have 6 characters completed BFLA and new Thackery quests.

I have 2 who have not completed EOTN.

from those 2, I had one complete Zinn's Task, see Zinn trial and dialoige 4 and got Lion's Arch Keep Access; But I can only get daily WANTED quests and not Inquistor quests.

So my two characters cannot do WIK or new Thackery quests, and are stuck.

Once in the keep you need to take care of Inquisitor Bauer, Lovisa, and Lashona.

After that there will be more dialogues between NPCs/Salma within the keep, after which you get the following story progression quests leading to BLA.

Each character needs to do all these steps; doing just one step on one peep does not transfer for all others.|||You need to view the dialogue outside EotN for the Ebon Vanguard to help in Kryta. Inquisitor quests follow once you have seen that and the dialogue in LA Keep between Langmar and Salma.|||Believe it or not Sir Jack, me and my friend have been doing most of Wik the past few days, and we didn't go to the EOTN once, and we're at the quest before BFLA, we haven't seen evenia recruit the Vanguard, or even seen any gwen dialogues, and Keiran and Langmar were still there in the last quest before BFLA, so i don't think the EOTN dialogues are 100% necessary, unless we just got lucky and it was bugged

But we went: -

Camp dialogues > Zinns trial > Camp recruiting Zinn > LA Keep > Inquisitor quests > Assassination quests , and were now on mustering a response and Keiran and Langmar are still there ready to escort livia and co outside beetletun.

So yeah either we got lucky and a bug made us skip the ebon vanguard and evenia stuff, or the EOTN dialogues / events aren't 100% necessary to advance the WiK.

But according to the flowchart, the Inquisitor quests should become available as soon as you get the keep unlocked, have you tried rezoning and seeing if they become unlocked then? if you still aren't getting them i would send a ticket to support, since I'm pretty sure your supposed to get them from the Wanted board as soon as you unlock the keep.

Let us know if we solved your problem, if not try giving us a bit more info about what these 2 characters have done that cant access it and we will see if we can help you a bit more

- Tsukasa|||thanks everyone.

I did rezone a few times; but no inquistor quests were given.

I do think its bugged as well.

i'll try the EOTN dialouge but tell me exactly WHERE do I need to go & see it; else its ticket time.|||Quote:

Believe it or not Sir Jack, me and my friend have been doing most of Wik the past few days, and we didn't go to the EOTN once, and we're at the quest before BFLA, we haven't seen evenia recruit the Vanguard, or even seen any gwen dialogues, and Keiran and Langmar were still there in the last quest before BFLA, so i don't think the EOTN dialogues are 100% necessary, unless we just got lucky and it was bugged

I started the dialogue chain yesterday on my Monk the exact same way as my other chars, so including all dialogues, and didn't have any problems /shrug

I heard the new War In Kryta quest may have introduced a few anomalies/bugs though.

To see the Vanguard dialogue, if Evennia left the camp, it should be right outside the EotN in the Ice Cliff Chasms. That might trigger it.|||Quote:

Weird one, shame i don't have another character WiK enabled to go try it out on

Will have to try and get another character through EOTN and see if i have any problems.

And Deathlife, as Sir Jack said, you will need to go to the EOTN and walk right outside, on the snow right in front should be Gwen, Langmar and Keiran i believe, facing Evenia, this will be the scene where she recruits their aid.

But i believe you have to have seen the 6 or 7 Gwen dialogues in the hall of monuments and done Keiran's scavenger hunt before this scene will appear.

But like i said to sir Jack above, me and my friend didn't do any of that, we got the quests as soon as we got to LA Keep.

Have you tried logging out, restarting the game and then going back in? not sure why it would change anything but you never know.

And you are checking the wanted board aren't you? Salma doesn't give the Inquisitor quests, only the assassination quests and the ones after that, the Inquisitor ones should be on the wanted board along with whatever today's Bounty is.

Also could you possible reply with what these two characters have done? like have both done Prophecys or EOTN? both seen the trial of Zinn and seen Livia recruit them etc etc.

If you can tell us what they have both done so far we may be able to help pin down what you have missed, or if its a bug or not.

- Tsukasa|||Did you all take the that new "primary" quest?|||OK results:

1. Relogging does not give me the inquisitor quests, and i am trying to get them from the post and not salma.

2. the toon which is having issues has completed prohecies but not EOTN. Only Zinn's task, then Zin's trial and then Zin recruitment dialouge in Dakatu Village.

3. Outside EOTN there is nothing, no one, in Dakatu village there are no more diaouges given. (i did NOT see dialouge 1, 2 & 3)

I belive that i need to complete EOTN on this charachter (which i hate doing)

Borlis Pass problems?

[:1]Been trying to do Borlis as the Zaishen today. Each time I get to Rurik the game locks up and 3 or so minutes later it tells it lost connection with the server. From there on I can't reconnect - even if I restart. Did -image and was able to restart the game only to lock again when I tried to talk to Rurik.

I deleted the dat file and I'm just downloading the whole thing again (pretty much done playing for the night). Anyone else having problems with this mission?

shield of the lion question

[:1]http://img545.imageshack.us/i/gw062w.jpg/

I have a shield of the lion shield from 3 years ago with a +20 mod but has no ''of fortitude'' mod nor an inscription. I want to transfer that +20 hp mod to a better shield but not sure if the mod came with the shield automatically or has a shield handle thingy. Thanks for any help!|||That's a Shield gotten from a collector, so I don't think it can be salvaged for that bonus. Some Collector weapons could be salvaged, but I think that only goes for some early Prophecies and Factions weapons.|||If the health mod could be removed the shield would be called "Shield of the Lion of Fortitude".

BTW, Lucky, we do have a Questions forum.|||I did a check, here's where that shield is from.

Shield of the Lion Armor: 13 7 Strength Health +20

Inscription: None 3 Silver Bullion Coins Mehtani Keys Ehiyah

Something you need to remember, +20 is not the max for heath mods for shields. +30 is.

You can get a collector shield from various peoples in Eye of the north that have the +30 mod, although like Jack says, it's non salvagable I think.|||Sorry for the wrong forum. Thanks for answering!

Newbie questions

[:1]What is up with all these different guild war types I've been seeing? Faction, Nightfall, etc.? Are they like expansion packs? If not, are there any expansion packs? If I just buy the original version (whichever it is), will it affect my gameplay? I just really want to level and pvp mostly (I think). Is max level really 20? I feel like I have many more questions but I can't think of them as of now. So in the case, if you have any good advice/tips/facts about this game for me, please feel free to write them down :). Thanks in advance.|||Guild Wars (Prophesies) = first chapter

Factions= 2nd

Nightfall=3rd

level cap is only 20, but there is much to do once you've reached it.

They're called chapters, and are completely standalone, however some story does tie them together. Also, you can buy one, later decide you want more...and you can take the same character across the ocean.

Nightfall introduces Heroes, which are basically customizable henchmen, they level up (to 20), you can give them gear and even find armor remnants to get them special armor sets( cosmetic only).

Eye of the North is the only expansion, you must have any of the others in order to play it.

Last thing I can think of right now, if you want to PvP a lot, you may consider getting the PvP unlock pack, so you can run the good builds from the start...I would suggest at least one chapter playthrough to get basic mechanics down personally.|||First off, thank you for the reply.

Is there any advantages/disadvantages from buying one of the chapters instead of the others or whatever? or do they only present basically different story modes? And yeah in most games I've played, I always tended to level first and then do a lot of pvp at max lvl. But I already got the original guild wars version for free so I'm not sure what to do. also if i dont have eye of the north, would that affect my gameplay at all? my pvp? or anything?|||Also, it sounds like having only one of the chapters will limit my abilities in pvp. Is that true? I read somewhere like you can only be an assassin with the Factions chapter or something for example, what if I want to be an assassin in pvp then? Also by having the pvp access kit, how would leveling work? Getting armor/weapons? Is pvp that good in this game to where I could be entertained by just pvp alone? All these chapters make things confusing...it'd be a lot easier if they just added more story to the game but from the sounds of it, it doesn't and that worries me a bit.|||By "original Guild Wars", do you mean Prophecies? It was the first campaign that was released and it's probably the easiest to start with too. From an experienced player's point of view it's the most boring chapter as well (that's just my opinion though, obviously), but you should enjoy your first play through it.

Eye of the North is an expansion (not a stand-alone campaign), it has some new skills and heroes that you can't get elsewhere, but that's it. Some of those skills are very powerful (especially in PvE) so it will affect your gameplay in that way. You won't need them to beat any of the previous chapters though. If you only want to play PvP, then I assume that these skills (apart from some special PvE-only skills) are included in the PvP unlock pack that Nochtflamir mentioned.

So if you've already got one of the chapters, then just start playing! You can buy and link the other chapters to your account at any point later, and of course play the new chapters with your existing characters. I would recommend you to play the PvE campaign first as well before trying PvP, you'll learn the controls and some basic stuff about the game nicely like that. And it helps a lot if you find a nice guild or have some friends to play with... Good luck! :)|||Quote:

Yes, that's true. You can only be an Assassin if you own the Factions campaign. Also, if you want to be a Ritualist, you need Factions as well. For Paragon and Dervish you need to have the Nightfall campaign...

You get the six "core" professions with each campaign (including Prophecies): Warrior, Monk, Elementalist, Mesmer, Ranger, Necromancer

When you create a character, you'll have to decide whether you want to make it a PvE or a PvP character.

If you choose to make a PvE character, you level up your character and have to find or craft all the weapons and armor that you want.

If you choose PvP, you skip the whole leveling up process and your character gains easy access to max level armor and weapons, but you can't play any of the PvE content with that character. You can unlock more stuff with faction points that you gain when playing.

Is PvP alone good enough reason to play this game? That's a difficult question to answer... I probably wouldn't be entertained for long enough, as I prefer PvE a lot more and only play PvP occasionally. But then again there are people who only play PvP and seem to enjoy it as well!|||yes I believe it is prophecies. on my ncsoft account, it just says guild wars. So if i get the pvp access kit, it will give me all the pvp options from all 3 chapters + expansion pack?

but yeah as to the faction/nightfall classes, that's what I thought and I'm not particularly fond of it. makes it seem like the game is separated into pieces and you gotta get all the pieces to have access to the game or something like that.

when you say you pick a character and decide whether or not to make it pvp or pve, does that mean your character can only be one or the other? meaning like on creation screen, it asks you pvp or pve or something? a little bit more elaboration on that would be greatly appreciated. makes me curious. also hows the game balanced, pvp vs pve amount wise? is the pvp any good in this game to begin with?

oh and also, thank you for replying.|||Quote:

is the pvp any good in this game to begin with?

I would wager that, as far as "MMO" games go, Guild Wars pvp is the best.

- Everyone has the same stats on their gear, so matches are determined by teamwork, strategy and skill. You can't just outgear your opponent and stomp him because you have better loot than he does.

- No giagantic delay from the time you buy to the time you can play. If you buy the pvp unlock packs, you could theoretically jump into the highest level of pvp gameplay on day 1. Not to say you'll do very well against experienced players, but you can GET there. There's no gigantic period of time that you have to spend grinding out a set of gear or rank, you don't have to /headdesk for months just to be competitive. Buy, install, play.

- Healing is so much more than "health bar goes down, health bar goes up". It's not just "react to damage and fill health bar again" -- preventing the damage from happening is usually the way to be successful. I don't heal in PvP so I'm the wrong guy to ask about it, but I have a healthy appreciation of the art.

- Everyone isn't a carbon copy of one another. I mean, yes, there's a "metagame" and "flavor of the month" trends, but overall there is variety. In other games, "every rogue will play the same" may hold true, but in GW, "every ranger will play the same" is definitely not true.

The only downside to Guild Wars PvP is that you're about 3 years too late. There are still matches going on all day every day, but the sheer amount of bodies playing the game is much less than it used to be. Sometimes you may have to wait a while for a match, and you may find yourself fighting familiar enemies more often than not. (of course, some would say that last part is a good thing!)

Cheers!|||Quote:

I'm not sure, but I think you'll get all the skills from these chapters. That's practically everything you need though, you don't get any better armor or weapons in the new chapters. As far as I know, you won't get the new professions with the pvp access kit though...

Of course, if you plan on buying all 3 chapters and the expansion, then you most likely won't need the pvp access kit.

Ah, I guess I wasn't clear enough. Yes, it asks you in the character creation screen whether you want to create a PvE (roleplaying) or a PvP character.

A PvE character can play PvP, but you need to level up your character first, buy some weapons and armor, acquire some skills, and then get yourself to some certain areas in the game where you can join PvP matches. That all takes some time... With a PvP character you can join the action almost instantly and you don't have to worry about getting armor or weapons, but the downside is that you can't play PvE with that character.

I'm not much of a PvP expert so someone else will be able to give you a better answer... PvP is (supposed to be) very good, sometimes it just puts me off because of the childish or elitist attitude of the players... but that's normal with all online gaming I suppose. I'm sure that PvP can be very rewarding, but it will take some time before you learn the basics.

gate too far and plague of destruction

No. A Gate Too Far starts out by talking to Olaf in Olafstead, and Plague of Destruction requires you to go through the portal in Varajar Fells. They're separate instances (and even has different completion markers), therefore they cannot be completed simultaneously.|||OK - thanks.

I didn't think they'd do something that easy, but I would have been ****** if I'd found after that I could've done 'em both at the same time.

imbagon questions

[:1]I just got ''save yourselves!'' skill and I'm trying out the imbagon build

http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Build:P/W_Imbagon

but I don't understand why I should use AR instead of using ''to the limit'' or some other skill?|||Because AR is in an attribute you're already putting points into? "To the limit" is tactics iirc. Plus AR stays up all the time as long as you keep shouting so it's fire and forget. You will also get increased damage output with the IAS from AR.|||Aggressive Refrain isn't even the same type of skill as To the Limit. There's nothing that says you can't bring both AR and TtL though. In fact they work great together.since TtL will keep renewing AR.|||Chuck a few spears with AR and without AR and the difference reason should be pretty apparent.

Or use candy.|||I figured (wrong) that AR only gives 25% ias while soldier's fury gives 33% and more adren and that both wouldn't add together the ias. So, I should keep AR and Sfury both active at same time?|||I like focused anger a lot better than Solder's Fury tbh. I combine that with "For Great Justice!" and use Drunken Master. You get a huge amount of adrenaline and a nice increased attack speed from Drunken Master without the drawbacks of paragon increased attack speed skills.

Technically speaking, this combination allows you to attack 33% faster like SF however you gain more adrenaline per unit time auto-attacking.|||Quote:

guild wars on steam

[:1]i am wanting to buy guild wars and then the factions and nightfall expansions for it but i have recently seen it advertised on steam?

this got me wandering could i save the whole game to steam so that i no longer need the disc to play it?

i know i used to do this with half life and counter strike but can i do this with any game that steam advertise?

my plan is that if i can do it then i will buy the games load them on to steam so i no longer need the disc then return it to the store for store credit or refund i have done this in the past but will it work with guild wars?|||Welcome to the forum, we're glad you found us. If you had posted this to the Newcomer & Questions forum we may have found an answer for you a bit sooner, But no worries, we'll get you to the right place.

In reply to your question, you do not need a game disc at all to install Guild Wars, however you will need an access code. You can download the game client from the guildwars.com website and then the game will stream the rest of the content to you as you go, however be aware it is a large amount of data. Alternatively you can use the game disc to install if you have a slower connection, but the game will still need to update afterward, it just may help speed things up for a slower connection.

The most important thing you will need is an access code though. You can get this from either:

1) packaged inside the retail box

2) purchase from the in-game store once you download and install the free client

3) purchase from another download service such as the NCsoft store or through the Steam service.

Since you need a unique access code to play it is highly unlikely that you will be able to return the opened disc to the store. Additionally, resale in this way is against the Guild Wars EULA.

I hope that helps you make your decision, and again, welcome to Tyria and the Guild Wars community. |||many thanks for your help and i fully understand where your coming from

Yep. All it takes is adding your full game key to your existing Guild Wars account and you're good to go with that account, along with the very characters you created in your trial period.

Wintersday Grentches?

[:1]I've been wondering where the grentches are in LA and Kamadan running around destroying presents. Has that not started yet or will they show up during the finale? Or maybe glitched?

Quickest way to use lots of tonics?

[:1]Wintersday is here, and that brings to mind one of the questions that has been nagging me, what is the fastest way to burn through a stack of tonics? I still have a few stacks left from last year as well as lots of fare from nick and other festivals, and I'm usually pretty good about using them when moving in and out of the guild hall, other than that, I'm usually forgetful.

What have people found to be the fastest loading areas to move back and forth to? Any other tips?

If I had to guess I'd warp back and forth between my GH and Port Sledge or something equally empty. I believe 2 can be used in PvE areas, but I believe that is the minority of my inventory.|||Obviously this applies only for the tonics that you can use in explorable areas...

Go to the Asuran Lab (in that WiK explorable area). Loose Magic removes the effect of any tonics that you use, and you return to your normal form. So when you're inside the lab, you can use all the tonics that you want without zoning.

To speed up the process, remember that if you double-click twice very quickly (quadruple-click? ) you can use two tonics at the same time.|||For tonics that can be used in explorables, the fastest way to burn them requires being far enough along in the War in Kryta to reach Zinn's lab in Divinity Coast. Go to the lab and stand within the Loose Magic effect, which will remove the tonic after each transformation.

For town tonics, go to Ascalon City and portal back and forth between AC and Great Northern Wall. This is one of the few places where there is an outpost on both sides of a portal, so you can use a tonic every time you zone in either direction.|||Standing in your guild-hall open up the guild-pane. Use a potion, go to an allied hall, use a potion, go to your own hall, rinse and repeat.|||the fastest would be standing next to a wurm spoor in the desolation. Use a tonic, use the wurm spoor, exiting the Junundu, use a tonic and repeat. You may be able to use an extra tonic right before you exit or turn into a wurm by just constantly clicking on your tonic. I managed to get rid of about 100 tonics in 20 or less. You don't have to wait for any loading into places.|||If you put in enough effort to making a macro(or downloading a clickbot) you can use up to 3 potions at once anywhere.

But now that we, as mentioned by others, have the secret lab, the point is moot.|||Does anyone have any ideas for tonics that can only be used in town?|||Saucer: What about BrettM's AC/GNW idea or my guild-hall trick?|||With Yuletide, Zaishen and Transmogrifier they can be spammed if u go to the Asura lab where the loose Magic is in effect. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Loose_Magic

Other than that activate 2 tonics at a time and zone between the hall and Zaishen Menangerie or use the wurms in nightfall as described above.

do i really need to finish war in kryta?

[:1]to get to the wedding?

i'm kind of stuck cos it's hard to finish the missions with hench and heroes....

seems like everyone else in the servers have finished it long ago... |||Well, the actual wedding isn't in the game yet, if it ever will be. But the Hearts of the North quest line, which supposedly leads up to the wedding, is only accessible if you finish the War in Kryta one.

Which mission do you have problems with?|||Just to confirm, for anyone else wondering:

The wedding is now in the game, and it can only be accessed after the Hearts of the North quest line. So yes, you unfortunately do need to finish the War in Kryta. Note that you do not, however, need to do the norn-catering quest.

Pronounciation of "Keiran"

[:1]How do you pronounce "Keiran?" Kay-ran? Kier-ran?

I might need the information for my Wintersday contest entry.|||I've been saying Keer-ran, although now that I look at it, I think keye-ran would be closer. Sort of like the country Iran, with a K in front.|||I pronounce it like "Keira" with an "n" at the end.

-T|||Okay.

How do you pronounce Keira?|||There was a kid at school called Keiran (he was a little ****, btw).

It's Kee-ran/Key-ran.|||Awesome sauce; really helpful. I'll go with "Kee-ran" if I end up using Keiran anywhere. Thanks everyone.|||Hmm that's not how I pronounce it. Personally I've only ever heard that name pronounced more K-ear-ran (bit like Kia the car manufacturer). Mind you for the character in GW, I'd think ****** or pillock would suffice.|||Kee(a)ran

Like the "a" is hardly there, more like a slight change of pitch at the end of the "ee". Stress on the first syllable.

That is how I pronounce it at least.|||That's pretty much bang on, Lensor, speaking as someone who's come across a couple of Keirans in real life in the past.

[EDIT] If anyone's still struggling to pronounce it, you could look at how the press pronounce Keira Knightly's name, what with "Keira" being a feminine version of "Keiran", their similarities in pronunciation and her being the best-known example of someone with the name.|||I'm not sure how to pronounce it, but I usually pronounce "Keiran" as:

Dd wɪθ eɪ goʊˈti / Dude with a goatee
